WHEN GOOD PEOPLE DO NOTHING
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do
nothing”. -- Edmund Burke,
Men in authority will always think that criticism of their policies is dangerous. They will always equate their policies with patriotism, and find criticism subversive: Henry Steele Commager - (1902-1998) Historian and author
There are no boundaries in this struggle to the death. We cannot be indifferent to what happens anywhere in the world, for a victory by any country over imperialism is our victory: Ernesto Che Guevara
The failure of vast societies to even care let alone do anything about suffering of their neighbors became the rule by which to live.
The silence and disinterest by people to the plights of the less fortunate while demanding more and more for themselves became the honorable path in life.
But most people couldn’t find the source or causes for their misery or why the world was going the way it was. But it was them. They were the cause of their own misery. They were the cause of the world’s problems yet they either failed to see it, or it was always someone else’s fault.
But regardless of lack of effort or interest, Lisa saw that people could not tell the difference between right and wrong even when it stared them in the face. And the stresses to conform to a society spiraling out of control were strong indeed.
But not for Lisa.
She was growing a new desire within her. She remembered the times in her life when she was lonely, in pain and confused. She remembered when warm healing smiles and hands would embrace her and make things right again. The healings she recalled were never just her body.
Sometimes the pain and hurt extended far from her physical body and the mind, body, emotional and spiritual healings shared by others offered a completeness she fondly remembered.
She made herself a promise that from now on she would share all she could. She could see the inner loneliness and confusion in those she saw on the streets. Lisa knew that every kind word, every gentle touch, every smile and every hug healed more deeply and longer than any other medicine.
Lisa began to care. But more than that, she included action. Never did she allow pity to over run her heart yet she knew the profound difference between helping and doing so with no expectation of return.
She had a good understanding of karmic law and resolved to bring comfort and friendship and if possible, light the odd candle or two.
There was no crusade or desire to change the world in her awakening. Her only inner need was not to sit and do nothing as the world dealt the cards to humanity.
She began to take responsibility.
And firstly she started out trying to find the true meanings of right or wrong. What was good for one person differed wildly with another. To lie, cheat, steal, bomb, rape, murder, poison, trick, starve and exploit was certainly the right thing to do by many.
But just for once ask those on the receiving end of these actions. To them, these actions are plainly wrong.
So in order to try a balance point in all these affairs, Lisa researched numbers. It was exceedingly obvious that vast numbers of people by a huge majority did not do wicked things. So how could all this mess be happening?
Simple. People had begun to lose their inner identity. They allowed the mind set of a manufactured herd mentality to overcome them. They allowed fear to be their master.
They began to obey.
